Samburu National Reserve – Northern Kenya’s Wild Frontier
Located in Northern Kenya, Samburu National Reserve is a strikingly beautiful and remote wilderness set along the life-giving banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro River. Covering approximately 165 square kilometres, the reserve is separated from Buffalo Springs National Reserve by the river, creating a dramatic oasis within an otherwise arid landscape of rugged hills, open plains, and riverine forests.
Samburu is internationally renowned for its rare and endemic wildlife, often referred to as the “Samburu Special Five”: Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx—species uniquely adapted to this semi-arid ecosystem. The reserve is also home to an impressive population of nearly 900 elephants, frequently seen along the riverbanks, as well as healthy numbers of plains game.
Predators are a major highlight, with lions, leopards, and cheetahs regularly sighted. Samburu is regarded as one of the best places in Kenya to spot leopards, while sightings of African wild dogs are also relatively frequent. The reserve gained global attention through the legendary story of Kamunyak, the lioness famously known for adopting a baby oryx, underscoring the reserve’s unique wildlife narratives.
Birdlife is equally exceptional, with over 450 recorded bird species, making Samburu a rewarding destination for birdwatching enthusiasts. Beyond the main reserve, the greater Samburu ecosystem includes important community-led conservation areas such as Kalama Conservancy, West Gate Community Conservancy, and Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy. These conservancies enhance wildlife protection while supporting local Samburu communities through sustainable tourism.
With its rare species, dramatic scenery, strong conservation model, and rich cultural heritage, Samburu National Reserve stands among the finest wildlife destinations in Africa, offering an authentic and deeply rewarding safari experience far from the crowds.
